7:30-11pm

September 5th sees Conduit host the first instalment and launch of a new series of sound activities; re::set. This series will explore various combinations of collectively run sound performance/presentations and site specific actions, each exploring divergent locations and approaches. This first event re::set conduit will feature works by

Nigel Brown: acoustic interference

John Jacobs: live word salad

Camilla Hannan: 4 channel processed space

Alice Hui-sheng Chang: duet for gate and voice

Michael Prior: cupboard sequencer

Zoe Scoglio: the sound of objects

Eamon Sprod: careful arrangements of sonic rubbish

For this first event each of the contributing artists will present overlapping individual works, slowly creeping their way from one end of Conduit to the other.

September 5th - 7:30pm for an 8:00pm SHARP start - ONE set approximately 1 hour 20 minutes long.

Thursday 4th September:

Floods - Purr - Adam Halliwell

8-11pm

Three acts will be performing intricate and extended guitar jams, evoking cinematic expressionism and vast sonic soundscapes. Layers of guitar will swamp the listener, weaving the beautiful and jarring, complex and minimalistic.

Tuesday 2nd September:

The Sacred Moose Ensemble (First and last show)

8-11pm

Melbourne music makers Paris Favilla (saxophone) and Nathan Liow (piano) formed the Sacred Moose ensemble in May 2014 during their recent adventure to the Jazz and Creative music workshop in Banff, Canada. This will be the Moose’s first and last show before Paris leaves for London, with Sarah Galdes on drums and Stephen Hornby on bass.

Saturday 6th September:

Jamati

8:30-11pm

The beginnings of this duo dates back to 2008 when both Paris Favilla(saxophone) and Marcos Villalta (guitar) were both undergrads at the Victorian College of the Arts. Since then they have performed original music as a pair, covers in corporate bands, and have recorded with larger original ensembles such as Maka Khan. For this performance they'll be exploring several compositional devices as well a experimenting with improvisation, playing written scores as well as descriptive conceptual and visual scores.  Over the years they have developed a dynamic interactive playing style,

which is constantly growing and ever changing, always bringing them to new and exciting performance experiences.

Saturday 13th September:

(PLACEBO) UTTER /  2 of 3

3 performances: 11am, 2pm and 7pm

James McAllister

Ivan Sikic

Peter Fraser

Jamie Lewis

Kelly Jirsa

Audrey McAllister

The project sets out to create a formal transactional interface between the practitioner and client… one that presents as a primary and secondary iteration of form. The main concern is with a transitional process and how it might engage with the soft architecture (both concrete and implied) of the transactional threshold and with the transaction itself. The artist and the viewer are presented with a contextual parenthesis that limits the actual possibilities of any exchange at the same time as it embellishes the idea and adjusts its value. Through the filter of these proposed relationships, the performance speculates on mortality.

Thursday 18th September:

‘Underdone’- Curated by Rebecca Jensen

8-11pm

‘It’s not perfect but its good enough’

Underdone is an evening of new ideas. 10 artists celebrate the classic Australian idiom “She’ll be right” presenting new performance that’s still raw in the middle but smells really good. It sucks when you burn something delicious, this will not happen at Conduit arts, September 18th. Join us for a drink as we embark on new journeys and say no to polished performance and yes to failure.

Saturday 20th September:

CURRENT#4

3-11pm

In May this year, Current shifted from a music-centric presentation to incorporate dance/movement, bringing a burst of excitement and energy at new found relationships and the ‘(re)discovery’ of a natural fit between the two disciplines. Now, for the second Current in 2014 (September 20th), we will be developing upon this complimentary pairing by inviting a visual artist to provide a stimulating component into the trio of dancers and musicians. Whatever the artist decides to introduce, it will inject the performance environment with an extra element for the performers to negotiate and another delicious ingredient to spice up our creative feast.

Sunday 21st September:

'Fluid Fantasy'- Curated by Sophie Perillo (Hi God People)

6-9pm

Fluid Fantasy consists of four live acts by Melbourne performance artists exploring the tainted notion of desire, its futility and fundamentality, while creating an enticing space for its existence. The Hi God People will seek to nurture imaginations and offer the potential for a toilet epiphany as one ponders the quest for eternal health and perfection, guided by a powerful and hypnotic guru. Artists Hannah Raisin, Roarawar Feartata and Jen Moore will lead us through fantasy, physicality, music, ritual and fun infused with the abject fluids of reality.

All is stream of consciousness & serious weather forecasts are as likely as carrot cake recipes.

Dom deClario and Kerrie Farnsworth will present a parallel world interlude of cocktail bar melancholic constancy colliding with noise drone saxelectrics and a rub of theremin ointment. Bring an extra set of ears.

A first time meeting of Stevie Richards (cleaninglady , Supreme Overlord) and Llara Isabell Arena (Smash Tennis) will see the slow burning candle of L.I.A's drums set beneath the kerosene can of Richard's modular synth. Multitudes: An immersive performance of light and music

Created by Dirk De Bruyn and Nat Grant

8-11pm

Saturday 27th – Sunday 28th September:

‘Infloresence’

Reuben Lewis and Dianne Fogwell

Opening performance 27th, 6-9pm

Gallery open 12-6pm, 28th Sep

Afternoon performance 28th 4-6pm

Pollinisers, pollinators and pollination are part of an exacting process that is fundamental to the world’s food source and usually goes unnoticed, quietly working away in the background of our daily lives. There is an intrinsic beauty to this process that has formed the basis of my contemplations leading to the work in this exhibition. When moths, butterflies, bees and others visit to harvest their essence it is a choreography that nature has performed throughout history. In these encounters, the flowers disclose their secret to the pollinators, who take it home in the form of scent and taste.” - Dianne Fogwell

Musicians Reuben Lewis, Miroslav Bukovsky, Mark Shepherd , Ronny Ferella, Geoff Hughes and master printmaker Dianne Fogwell come together to contemplate the natural choreography of pollination. Drawing on their accumulated history and perforated backgrounds in jazz, groove-music and free improvisation the ensemble will explore the sympathetic resonances found in this hidden world of Dianne’s artwork; illuminating memories of pollinators planted, plucked, gathered, observed and listened to.

'Yes, but it should be.'

Si Ma Va

Yes, but it should be. I mean, it can’t help be a show, no?

I guess so. Hm. It’s just so hard to know with the lack of distinction between art and real life these days. I can’t even tell who the artist and the viewer is anymore.

Haha, yeah, what is it… everyone is an artist and everything is art?

That sounds somewhere between right and wrong.

Yeah, it helps knowing what you’re looking at… what will we be looking at?

Um. Well, there will be people doing stuff, getting on and getting by… figuring out what to make of the place in the place. And there’ll be all these things in there…

(picture)

Well, it looks like art.

Yeah, I don’t know. If all goes to plan during the week, it will be over by then and we’ll just know, you know?

HALFSHARK

Album Launch

Saturday November 22nd

8pm to 11pm

HALFSHARK:
A subspecies of human known for their genderless physique, ability to communicate through melody and song, and give birth to shadows from their fingertips. Much like caterpillar metamorphosis, when one member of a halfshark is removed, the remaining species break down to imaginal cells (similar to stem cells), reassembling themselves back together in order to create a new shape, making this subspecies the most transfixing of all.

FRANK SOCIETY

Featuring Organic Robot & Claire Lefebvre

Friday November 21st, 8pm to 11pm

The sonic equivalent of a film and painting is what Frank Society create in their ambient, melancholic soundscapes. Band and art project hailing from Box Hill, they combine elements of washy shoegaze effects, pop melodies and jazz improv. It's hard not to have your deepest urges, and your darkest secrets, come to the fore as you're consumed by the wall of sound this 6-piece construct.

With only one headline gig/exhibit a month, their November set at Conduit Arts is sure to be an experience. Art installations designed and built by the band members will be set up around the room as well as a few VERY special guests also making an appearance.

Fellow Box Hill Institute alumni Organic Robot will play an opening set of their electronic soundscapes to take you to another world and Claire Lefebvre's stunning artworks will be on display. The detail and intricacy of Claire's works is a sight to behold and complements the emotional complexity of the tunes to a tee.

The Extended Flute
Anna Svensdotter

Northern light, energy and counterpoint for flute and electronics with the Swedish flutist, Anna Svensdotter.

In a program where the flute and electronics give and take from one another in a musical collaboration, she presents music by young Swedish composers, as well as by established and world wide known names like Steve Reich and Kaija Saariaho.

Anna Svensdotter is educated at the Academy of Music in Gothenburg, and belongs to the handful of Swedish flutists who focus on new music and extended techniques. Since 1993 she has been on the Swedish stage for contemporary music and improvisation, always with a strong musicality and personality. She appears in several different ensembles, such as the flute quartet 40f, the experimental quartet Ensemble Parkour, and the free improv trio Ek/Janson/Svensdotter. The solo CD "Alpha Waves" with Swedish music for flute and electronics, most of it written directly for Ms Svensdotter, was released in March 2013 with great reviews.

Translating Mountains

Miranda Hall

Escape the bright city lights and come with us to the mountains of Yunnan. The white walls of Conduit Arts will be transformed into the mountains and memories of the Naxi people of Lashihai.

This new cross-media graphic score by Miranda Hill explores the melodies of family and natural histories; taking an ancient language and reinterpreting it through new musical expression.

FānYìShān translates the spoken languages of Lijiang into a musical language. It takes the natural melody of tonal languages and joyous inflection of storytelling, and sets them against the imposing mountainous horizon.

This work explores the intricacy of meaning, of what's gained and lost in the act of translation, of languages not taught in schools and a culture fighting assimilation. It tells a story of lived history, of a changing landscape, and a grandparent's love.

Created while in residency at Lijiang Studio, Yunnan, China, as part of the collaborative duo Fine Fine Small Mountain.

The palimpsest is a manuscript page where the text has been scraped off so that the document can be re-used. Applying this concept to a live performance will involve the layering and erasing of sounds. Motifs will overlap, disintegrate and reemerge as performers add and erase sonic layers exploring the temporality of sound.

Adam Simmons

2–30 NOVEMBER

Melbourne’s live music scene is one of the best in the world. One reason for the strength of musical expression to emerge from Melbourne comes from the diversity and flexibility of its musicians to work across different scenes. One musician who exemplifies this is woodwind multi-instrumentalist Adam Simmons. During November 2015, Adam performed 25 concerts with four duets each night with 100 different musicians from rock/pop, jazz, experimental, world, folk, blues, classical, electronica and more.

In addition, Adam along with sound engineer Myles Mumford and Associate Professor John Fitzgerald (University of Melbourne) created an installation during the month in Conduit Arts, illustrating the ways in which the various artists all connect.

A list of the artists involved and the recordings of each performance are now available on the website.
